Feel better every day: how to start new habits and stop old ones

If you’re looking to feel calmer, more balanced, or just healthier in your daily life, introducing new habits can make a big difference. At the same time, letting go of habits that no longer serve you is equally important. The secret? Honest reflection, small steps, and consistency.

Reflect on your current habits and needs

The first step in improving your wellbeing is noticing what you really need right now. Ask yourself: what would make me feel better? Maybe it’s more rest, movement, mindful eating, or simply time to breathe.

Equally, take a moment to notice habits that might be holding you back. Do certain routines leave you drained or stressed? For example, scrolling social media first thing in the morning may leave you feeling anxious rather than energised. Identifying what to stop doing is just as crucial as choosing what to start.

Start small with microsteps for wellbeing

Trying to overhaul your entire routine at once is rarely sustainable. Instead, break new habits into microsteps - tiny, achievable actions that you can do consistently.

Some examples for wellbeing:

  • Meditate for one minute each morning.

  • Take a five-minute walk after lunch.

  • Eat one meal mindfully, paying attention to flavours and texture.

These microsteps might feel almost too small, but they are proven to be likely to help you sustain a new habit - and doing them consistently is what helps habits stick.

Link new habits to routines you already have

Habit stacking makes new wellbeing habits easier to adopt. Attach a new action to something you already do:

  • After brushing your teeth, take one minute for deep breathing.

  • When your kettle boils, step outside for a short stretch.

  • Before checking emails, jot down one thing you’re grateful for.

By connecting new habits to existing routines, you’ll make them easier to remember and maintain.

Letting go of habits that don’t serve you

Improving wellbeing isn’t just about starting new habits; it’s also about stopping those that no longer help you. Small changes can make a big difference:

  • Swap evening scrolling for journaling or reading.

  • Reduce caffeine gradually instead of quitting cold turkey.

  • Say no to commitments that drain your energy.

Releasing old habits frees up space, both mentally and physically, for the habits that support your health and happiness.

Reflect, adjust, and celebrate

Remember, habit building isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. Take time to reflect on what’s working and what’s not, and adjust your habits as needed. Keep a simple journal of wins, challenges, and insights.

Celebrate even the smallest victories. A single minute of meditation, a short walk, or a mindful meal counts. These small wins build momentum over time, making your new wellbeing habits easier to maintain.

Let's wrap it up

Introducing new habits to improve your wellbeing is about being honest with yourself, taking microsteps, and letting go of what doesn’t serve you. By reflecting, starting small, and celebrating progress, you can create meaningful, lasting change in your daily life...one tiny step at a time!
